Fermin Lasuen founded the twelfth California mission here on September 25, 1791. In July 1885 three Hawaiian princes, David Kawananakoa, Edward Keliiahonui and Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, surfed at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River on boards milled from local redwood, which is the earliest documented surfing in California and the reason this town claims the sport's mainland beginning. The Beach Boardwalk opened in 1904 and its Giant Dipper, built in 1924, is the fifth oldest roller coaster in the country. The University of California opened a campus above the town in 1965.
