Gaspar de Portola's party reached this coast on August 3, 1769. John P. Jones and Robert and Arcadia Baker founded the town in 1875, naming it for the feast of Saint Monica, though another account credits Juan Crespi, who is said to have thought two springs here resembled the tears the saint shed over her son. It incorporated on November 30, 1886. The pier was built in 1909 and carries the Looff Hippodrome, a National Historic Landmark, with a carousel inside it that has been turning on that spot longer than most of the city around it has stood.
