Sausalito is a waterfront town on San Francisco Bay just north of the Golden Gate, known for its artist community, floating homes, and Mediterranean hillside setting. Its scenery has long attracted creative, easygoing residents.

The name is from the Spanish sauzalito, a small willow grove. During the Second World War the Bechtel Corporation ran Marinship on this shoreline, building Liberty ships with thousands of workers housed in Marin City nearby. When the yards were decommissioned after the war, people began living on the leftover hulls and materials, and by the late 1960s there were at least three houseboat communities on the waterfront; the conflicts with developers through the 1970s are still called the Houseboat Wars. Auto ferries ran to the Hyde Street Pier from 1926 until March 1941. The town incorporated on September 4, 1893.
