An Alachua County village under enormous live oaks beside a wide prairie preserve, quiet and slow, which suits contemplative, unhurried routines.
Gainesville is twelve miles north and the village itself is a few brick streets under moss. A session received at home suits a place this small. Flower essence blends are mixed in Michigan and travel to you by post.
Micanopy was founded in 1821 and is the oldest inland town in Florida, sitting about twelve miles south of Gainesville in Alachua County. The ground has been settled far longer than that: in 1539 it was a village of the Potano, a Timucua people, when Hernando de Soto's expedition passed through, and in 1774 the botanist William Bartram visited a Cuscowilla village on the same site. The town takes its name from Chief Micanopy of the Seminole, whose people grew prosperous raising cattle and horses on the land now protected as Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. What remains is a village of mossy oaks and quiet brick streets, with more than twenty antique shops and galleries along tree-lined Cholokka Boulevard.
