Vicente Martinez Ybor moved his cigar operation here in 1885 and the factories of Ybor City rolled their first cigars in 1886. At the peak in 1929 more than five hundred million cigars a year were rolled by hand in this city. Henry B. Plant's narrow-gauge South Florida Railroad had reached Tampa in late 1883, which is what made any of it possible. In 1904 a group of local businessmen named themselves Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla after a pirate who never existed, and the festival has run nearly every year since, which is a fair summary of how Tampa handles its own history.
