This is the Georgia Canton, seat of Cherokee County on the Etowah River. It was first called Etowah after the river, then renamed for the Chinese city during a short-lived local attempt to start a silk industry. Canton Cotton Mills, founded by R. T. Jones in 1899, was the county's main industry until it closed in 1981; it was making cotton thread by 1901, denim by 1902, and Canton denim became known nationally, with a second mill added in 1923. That hundred-and-twenty-year-old mill on the riverbank near downtown is now the Mill on Etowah, a quarter of a million square feet holding a brewery, marketplace, restaurants and workspace. The Etowah and Blankets Creek were also worked in Georgia's gold rush, decades before California's.
