Aurora wired its downtown for electric lamps in 1881 and has answered to City of Lights ever since, a name the Paramount marquee on Stolp Island still keeps up. Evenings here fill quickly. Sessions are worked remotely at an hour you choose, so nobody is crossing the Fox River twice to make one.
The McCarty brothers settled both sides of the Fox River in 1834 after the Black Hawk War and sold the west bank to the Lake brothers, who put up a mill. When the city incorporated in 1857 the two sides could not agree which bank should hold the public buildings, so most of them went up on Stolp Island in the middle of the river, which is where the city hall still is. In 1881 Aurora became one of the first cities in the country with an all-electric street lighting system, and in 1908 it took the nickname City of Lights from it.
