Gerry Bates of Ohio established a settlement here in 1842 on what the record describes as a tract of treeless land. It was named Cottage Hill in 1845 when the post office opened and took the name Elmhurst in 1869, which is a fair distance to travel from treeless in twenty-seven years. Thomas Barbour Bryan, called the father of Elmhurst, gave the land for the college organized in 1871. The village incorporated on June 5, 1882 with somewhere between seven hundred and twenty-three and a thousand and fifty residents. The Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art stands in Wilder Park.
