The town is named for lead ore, dug out of these hills in an 1820s rush that briefly made it the busiest port on the upper Mississippi. Booms end and the ground stays. Twenty-one million pounds of lead came out of the ground here between 1825 and 1828 and the population went from two hundred to ten thousand, which at that moment made it a rival to Chicago. Steamboat trade began in 1824 and this became the largest steamboat port on the Mississippi north of St. Louis, until the river silted up past use. Ulysses S. Grant came in 1860 to work in the family leather business, and the town gave him a brick house on his return in 1865. Eighty-five percent of the buildings here stand inside the historic district.
