Wilmette is home to the luminous Baha'i House of Worship, a place of quiet reflection near the Lake Michigan shoreline and Gillson Park. A community that already gathers in stillness leans naturally toward mindful, holistic practices that gently ease everyday stress.
Sheridan Road runs Wilmette's lakefront past Plaza del Lago, on the strip once called No Man's Land before the village annexed it. The attunement material is digital and does not expire, so the practice keeps whatever hours you keep.
The village is named for Antoine Ouilmette, a French-Canadian fur trader, and his wife Archange, who were granted twelve hundred and eighty acres of this land on July 29, 1829. It incorporated on September 19, 1872 at Andrew Sherman's house on Greenleaf Avenue. The lakefront at Gillson Park is made ground, landfill produced when the North Shore Channel was dug in 1907 and handed to the park district by state legislation on May 25, 1911. The Baha'i House of Worship on the lake was begun in 1920 and not finished until 1953; it is the only one of its kind in North America.
