Immigrants began arriving in 1852 to work the packing plants, and the settlement they built in the southwest of the city became Little Bohemia and then Czech Village. Today Czech Village and New Bohemia sit together along the Cedar River as one district, home to the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library and more than fifty independent shops, bakeries and studios. On the east side, Brucemore is a twenty-six-acre estate built around an 1886 Queen Anne mansion and its gardens, once home to a run of prominent Cedar Rapids families and now open to the public. The river that ties both districts together is also the one that flooded them in 2008, which is why so much of the ground here is rebuilt rather than merely old.
