Clear Lake is a Cerro Gordo County city built along the shore of the lake that gives it its name, and that water has made it one of the most visited recreation spots in Iowa. The 2020 census counted 7,687 residents. At 460 North Shore Drive stands the Surf Ballroom, raised in 1948 on the site of an earlier ballroom that had burned the year before, with a thirty-thousand-square-foot entertainment floor and room for about 2,100 people. On February 2, 1959 the Surf hosted the final performances of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson on the Winter Dance Party tour, hours before the plane crash in northern Iowa. In 2020 the building was named a National Historic Landmark, one of only twenty-seven in the state.
