Dubuque is the oldest city in Iowa, founded in 1833 and one of the oldest settlements west of the Mississippi, set against limestone bluffs above the river. Its name comes from Julien Dubuque, a Quebecois lead miner who in 1788 was granted rights by the Mesquakie to mine their land, married the daughter of their chief, and in 1796 had his petition confirmed, naming his hundred-and-eighty-nine-square-mile holding the Mines of Spain in honour of the Spanish governor. He was buried under a log mausoleum with full tribal honours. The Mines of Spain Recreation Area now covers fourteen hundred and thirty-seven acres of wooded and prairie land just south of the city, a National Historic Landmark holding his monument above the mouth of Catfish Creek. In town, the Fenelon Place Elevator, built in 1882, climbs about a hundred and ninety feet up the bluff.
