A literary-and-medical college town with deep mindfulness and plant-medicine culture.
A UNESCO City of Literature keeps odd hours, and students, hospital staff and residents often change addresses between semesters. Digital attunement materials stay with you permanently, so a move across town never separates you from what you have studied. Many people find an evening session at home easier to keep than a drive.
Iowa City became the first UNESCO City of Literature in the United States in 2008, and the third in the world. The designation rests on the Iowa Writers' Workshop, founded in 1936, whose alumni and faculty have taken more than forty Pulitzer Prizes and include Flannery O'Connor, Kurt Vonnegut, John Irving and Marilynne Robinson. At the centre of the university campus stands the Old Capitol, chosen as the capital of the Iowa Territory in 1839 and the state capitol from statehood in 1846 until 1857, a Greek Revival building whose dome became the university's emblem and a National Historic Landmark. Northeast of downtown, Hickory Hill Park covers 190 acres of forest, reconstructed prairie, wetland and old field along Ralston Creek, acquired in 1967 and laced with several miles of wooded trail.
