Madison County holds six covered bridges, all of them within roughly a thirty-minute drive of Winterset and all added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s. Two of them, the Roseman Bridge and the Holliwell Bridge, span the Middle River, and Holliwell was built over that river in 1880 about two miles southeast of town. Four miles southwest lies Pammel State Park, one of the first Iowa state parks dedicated in 1928, with the Middle River running through it, a historic ford from the early 1900s, a nature center and a long run of trails. The park also holds Harmon Tunnel, first cut in 1858 and later enlarged into the first vehicle tunnel on an Iowa state highway.
