William Smeathers arrived in 1797 at a place called Yellow Banks, on the crook of a bend in the Ohio thirty-seven miles from Evansville. It was formally established in 1817 as Owensborough, for Colonel Abraham Owen, and the spelling was shortened in 1893. Two things carry the town's name now. It calls itself the barbecue capital of the world and holds the International Bar-B-Q Festival every second weekend in May. And it holds the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum, along with ROMP, the River of Music Party, which has grown to around twenty-five thousand visitors a year.
