Tucked deep in the Appalachian coalfields along the Big Sandy River, Pikeville holds mountain folk-herbalism traditions, where plants like ginseng and goldenseal have long been gathered and honored.
The Cut-Through carved a channel straight through the ridge so road, rail and river could share one narrow valley floor. A session held at a distance removes the trip completely, leaving only a quiet room and an unhurried hour. Essence blends are mixed in Michigan and mailed up the valley, which many people find simpler than arranging a day away.
Pikeville was laid out in 1824 as the town of Pike, incorporated under that name in 1848 and renamed in 1850. It is best known for two things a long way apart. Randolph McCoy, his wife and his daughter are buried on a hillside above the town, which puts the Hatfield and McCoy feud in the local cemetery rather than in folklore. And between 1973 and 1987 the Pikeville Cut-Through moved nearly eighteen million cubic yards of rock and soil to reroute the Levisa Fork away from the town and end its flooding, one of the largest earth-moving projects ever attempted in the eastern United States.
