Puritan exiles led by William Stone settled Providence on the north shore of the Severn in 1649, and in 1694 Royal Governor Francis Nicholson moved the provincial capital to Anne Arundel's Towne and renamed it Annapolis for Princess Anne. The State House, begun in 1772 and first used by the legislature in 1779, is the oldest state capitol still in legislative use. Congress sat here from November 26, 1783 to August 19, 1784, so this was the national capital when George Washington resigned his commission on December 23, 1783 and when the Treaty of Paris was ratified on January 14, 1784. The Naval Academy was established in 1845, and St. John's College traces back to King William's School of 1696.
