Bethesda is named for the Bethesda Meeting House of 1820, rebuilt in 1849, which took its own name from the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. It is an unincorporated place in southern Montgomery County rather than a city, which surprises people given its size. The National Naval Medical Center, now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, was built between 1940 and 1942, and the National Institutes of Health campus went up just north of the developing downtown in the postwar years. Those two institutions turned tobacco country into one of the larger employment centers outside Washington.
