The Pennsylvania brothers William and Thomas Towson began farming on Sater's Hill around 1752, and William's son Ezekiel opened the hotel that served farmers hauling goods down to the Baltimore port. On February 13, 1854 the rural parts of Baltimore County voted to make Towson the county seat, and the courthouse followed. Charles Ridgely finished Hampton just north of Towsontown in 1790, the largest private house in America at the time, and the Ridgelys stayed in it for six generations until 1948. The Maryland State Normal School, founded 1865, opened its doors on January 15, 1866 and moved onto its Towson campus in 1915.
