Known as the Rail City for its Southern Pacific railroad roots, Sparks centers its community life on pedestrian-friendly Victorian Square and the 80-acre Sparks Marina, with the Truckee River tracing its southern edge and mountain views in nearly every direction. The outdoor, community-minded spirit here already leans toward fresh air and mindful living.
Sparks sits at the east end of the Truckee Meadows, so an appointment often means driving west into Reno first. A distance session removes that leg, because nothing depends on a road, a parking spot or a waiting room. Essence blends are prepared by hand in Michigan and mailed to your address.
The Southern Pacific built a switch yard and maintenance sheds here in 1904 and a town grew around the work. It was first called Harriman, for E. H. Harriman, the president of the railroad, and then renamed for John Sparks, who was governor of Nevada from 1903 to 1908. The B Street district was redeveloped in 1996 with a multi-screen cinema and a plaza, and that pedestrian area is now Victorian Square. Sparks has always been the working half of the Truckee Meadows, distinct in character from Reno next door even though the two now run together on the map.
