Buffalo was chosen over Black Rock as the western end of the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825 and made it the main inland port between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic. In 1843 Joseph Dart and Robert Dunbar built the first grain elevator here, moving a thousand bushels an hour, and it turned the city into the largest grain port in the world. The city holds the oldest urban park system in the United States, laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted. In 1901 the Pan-American Exposition came here to show off electricity, and William McKinley was shot at it; Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in at the Wilcox mansion.
