The town was formed on April 11, 1805 out of Batavia, with the first settler arriving in 1804 near what is now Mayville, and the county was created on March 11, 1808. What the place is known for started in 1874, when the inventor Lewis Miller and the Methodist bishop John Heyl Vincent founded a summer teaching camp for Sunday-school teachers on the west shore of the lake; people came by steamboat and studied scripture using the geography of Palestine Park. Vincent founded the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle in 1878, one of the oldest continuously operating book clubs in America. The Interior Department made the grounds a National Historic Landmark District in 1989.
