The city sits at the south end of Cayuga Lake where glaciers left the land cut into gorges, and the water comes down through them in falls: Fall Creek, Cascadilla, Buttermilk, Enfield and Taughannock. Cornell was founded in 1865 on the hill above, with Ithaca College also in town. Before Hollywood consolidated the business, this was a real center of silent film: the brothers Leopold and Theodore Wharton ran a studio here and shot pictures using the local scenery, on the ground that is now Stewart Park. The Ithaca Gun Company started in 1883 and the city's industrial period ran from there.
