Nyack rises on the Hudson's west bank beneath the Tappan Zee, a village known for its galleries, independent shops, and as the birthplace of painter Edward Hopper. A riverfront arts community with a creative, open spirit sits comfortably alongside mindful, holistic practice.
Traffic across the Cuomo Bridge sets the tone for a Rockland County weekday, and Hook Mountain stands over the shoreline path north of the village. A session that needs no bridge crossing simply removes that obstacle. Michigan is where your blend is mixed, and the postal service handles the rest.
The name is Algonkian and means the fishing place, according to a 1938 plaque set up for the Tappan people. The village stands on the west bank of the Hudson about fifteen miles above Manhattan, on the wide reach called the Tappan Zee, and the bridge across it opened in December 1955. Three industries ran here in succession: sandstone quarrying from about 1800 to 1840, shoemaking from about 1828 to 1900, and boat building from about 1915 to 1948, including submarine chasers in both world wars. The painter Edward Hopper was born at 82 North Broadway, now the Edward Hopper House. Carson McCullers is buried at Oak Hill.
