Findlay Market stands in Over-the-Rhine on land that came from the estate of General James Findlay and Jane Irwin Findlay. The cornerstone went down in October 1852 but the doors did not open until February 1855, because the cast and wrought iron frame was a technology barely used in the country at that point and the contractors fought over it. City civil engineer Alfred West Gilbert directed the design. It is the oldest continuously operated public market in Ohio and the last of the nine that once fed the city, and it was listed on the National Register on June 5, 1972.
