Oak Openings Preserve just west of Toledo holds one of the rarest oak savannas in the country, thick with wildflowers each spring. Flower essences suit a region that already knows its native plants, and every blend is mixed to order in Michigan and posted. Reiki sessions run at a distance, so no drive is involved.
Edward Drummond Libbey moved his family's New England Glass Works from Massachusetts to Toledo in 1888, chasing newly found natural gas and cheaper production, and the city has been the Glass City since. He and Florence Scott Libbey co-founded the Toledo Museum of Art in 1901, by which point the reputation was already set on bottles, window glass, tableware, windshields and building material. The museum's Glass Pavilion, the first United States building by the Tokyo firm SANAA, holds thousands of works of glass from the ancient world forward along with working furnaces where the material is still handled the old way.
