Joseph C. Avery staked a claim in October 1845 where the Marys River comes into the Willamette, and William F. Dixon of Maryland took six hundred and forty acres immediately north of him. Avery went to the California gold fields, came back with money, opened a general store and in 1849 platted a town on his claim which he named Marysville. In 1853 it was renamed Corvallis, from the Latin for heart of the valley, to stop the confusion with another Marysville in California, and it incorporated in 1857. Oregon State University was designated the state's land grant college in 1868 under the Morrill Acts.
