An 1866 iron furnace still stands near the river in George Rogers Park, a reminder that this town smelted ore long before it became a quiet address. An iron furnace was built here in 1866 where Oswego Creek meets the Willamette, and it went into blast in 1867. On August 24 of that year the Oregon Iron Company became the first in the country to smelt pig iron west of the Rocky Mountains, and it grew into the largest manufacturing business in nineteenth-century Oregon. Everything it needed was within reach: ore running forty-four to fifty-four percent iron, the river for shipping, Sucker Lake for water power and heavy forest for charcoal, with limestone brought down from the San Juan Islands to the company docks. Between 1867 and 1885 it made forty-two thousand tons. The furnace still stands in George Rogers Park, the only charcoal blast furnace left west of the Rockies.
