The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was built in 1871 and is the oldest structure in Newport, the only wooden lighthouse left in Oregon and the only combined keeper's quarters and light tower on the coast. It worked for three years. In 1874 the light at Yaquina Head took over the job and this one was decommissioned, which is why it survived unaltered; Oregon State Parks owns it and it is open to visitors. Down the hill the bayfront still works, with fish processing plants and charter boats on the same street as galleries and shops. Nye Beach has kept the shape it had in the 1920s.
