Bellefonte takes its name from its spring. Legend holds that the French diplomat Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord, for whom Talleyrand Park is named, saw the Big Spring and exclaimed la belle fonte, the beautiful fountain. That spring has discharged on the order of eleven to fifteen million gallons a day since the town was founded in 1795 and for a long time before. Talleyrand Park covers three and a half acres along Spring Creek beside the downtown historic district, its bridges and monuments reflecting the town's Victorian period. Bellefonte grew wealthy and politically prominent between the 1860s and 1880s, building whole neighbourhoods in the Victorian styles of the day, and it is known as the Governor's Town: seven governors came from here, five of Pennsylvania.
