Carlisle was settled in 1751 and incorporated as a borough on April 13, 1782. Benjamin Rush turned the Carlisle Grammar School into Dickinson College in 1773, the first new college chartered in the newly recognized United States. The Revolutionary War munitions depot here later became the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, among the oldest Army posts in the country. On July 1, 1863, while the armies were meeting thirty miles south, Confederate cavalry under Fitzhugh Lee shelled the town. The Carlisle Indian Industrial School operated here from 1879 to 1918 as the first federally supported off-reservation boarding school for Native children.
