Josiah White and his partners in the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company founded this town in 1818 as Mauch Chunk, from the Lenape Mawsch Unk, bear place. In 1827 they built an eight-and-a-half-mile gravity railroad to run coal downhill to the canal, and by the 1850s people were paying fifty cents to ride it for the thrill. Asa Packer arrived in 1833, took control of a railroad in 1851 and made it the Lehigh Valley in 1853; his mansion opened as a museum on Memorial Day 1956. In 1954 the two boroughs merged and renamed themselves for Jim Thorpe, who is buried here and who never set foot in the place while alive.
