The township was established in 1769 and named for two members of the British Parliament who had defended the American colonists, John Wilkes and Isaac Barre. In 1808 Judge Jesse Fell worked out how to burn anthracite on an iron grate, which turned a rock nobody could light into a fuel, and the coal under this valley made the city; it was called the Diamond City for it, and at its peak more than a hundred national corporations kept headquarters around Public Square. In June 1972 Tropical Storm Agnes pushed the Susquehanna to nearly forty-one feet and put nine feet of water through downtown.
