The name comes from a Muskogean word for rock, most often read as a reference to Lookout Mountain standing over the bend in the Tennessee River. Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant broke the siege here between November 23 and 25, 1863, taking Lookout Mountain on the 24th and Missionary Ridge on the 25th. By the 1930s the railroads had made it the Dynamo of Dixie, and Glenn Miller's 1941 recording turned Terminal Station into the Chattanooga Choo Choo. In 1969 the federal government named its air the dirtiest in the nation, and the city spent the following decades reversing that, then in September 2010 became the first place in the United States where the municipal utility sold gigabit internet.
