Abram Maury Jr. founded Franklin on October 26, 1799 and named it for Benjamin Franklin. On November 30, 1864 the Second Battle of Franklin was fought across what is now the middle of town, and three houses that stood through it are still standing: the Carter House, Carnton and the Lotz House. City ordinance protects the older buildings and neighborhoods, which is why Main Street looks the way it does rather than by accident. The district still works as a commercial street and hosts festivals through the year.
