The modern town was re-chartered in 1917 and laid out as a garden city on a plan by John Nolen of Cambridge, Massachusetts, who zoned it into separate districts for industry, commerce, churches and housing. That deliberate design earned it the nickname the Model City. Eastman Chemical's first plant and its world headquarters are both still here.
