Construction of Fort Dummer began on February 3, 1724 and was finished before that summer, making it the first permanent English settlement in what became Vermont. Governor Benning Wentworth chartered the township on December 26, 1753 as Brattleborough, for Brigadier-General William Brattle Jr. of Boston. The Estey Organ Company ran here for about a century from 1852 and was at its height the largest organ maker in the United States. Rudyard Kipling married Carrie Balestier of Brattleboro in 1892, built Naulakha just over the line in Dummerston, and wrote The Jungle Book there.
