Vergennes was established as a city in 1788, the first city chartered in Vermont and still the smallest of the ten by population. It is named for Charles Gravier, comte de Vergennes, the French minister who did as much as anyone abroad for the American cause. A 37-foot waterfall on Otter Creek drops right through the middle of town. In 1814 Thomas Macdonough built and armed here the fleet that beat the British on Lake Champlain, including the Saratoga, the Eagle, the Ticonderoga and the Preble, and the Bixby Memorial Free Library is the civic center of the place today.
