Lawrence University was founded in 1847 with money from Amos A. Lawrence, and the town took its name from Samuel Appleton, Lawrence's father-in-law, who gave $10,000 to the new college library. On September 30, 1882 the Vulcan Street Plant on the Fox River began operating as the first hydroelectric central station in the country, and the Hearthstone House it powered became the first home in the world lit from a central hydroelectric station. The locks along the Fox carried the paper mills that ran the local economy for a century. Harry Houdini grew up here, and the History Museum at the Castle still keeps an exhibit about him.
