Baraboo nestles among the ancient quartzite bluffs of the Baraboo Range, minutes from Devil's Lake State Park, the International Crane Foundation, and Circus World. Its dramatic geology and abundant trails draw people outdoors, encouraging the kind of grounded, nature-centered living that suits holistic wellbeing.
Aldo Leopold wrote his sand county essays a short drive from here, and the grand old Ringling theatre still anchors the square downtown. Digital attunement materials sit in your own files permanently, ready for whenever the season slows down and the trails empty out again.
The Ringling brothers settled in Baraboo in 1875, gave their first show at Mazomanie in 1882, and established the circus here in 1884, which is why the town is called Circus City and why Circus World Museum is here. The Baraboo River runs through it and the Baraboo Hills around it were named a Last Great Places site by the Nature Conservancy, their rock older and stranger than most of the state because of what the glaciers did and did not do to them. Devil's Lake, the largest state park in Wisconsin, takes in a good part of those hills. Aldo Leopold bought his shack outside town in the 1930s, and A Sand County Almanac came out of it.
