James Duane Doty bought 1,261 acres on the isthmus for $1,500 in 1829, and on November 28, 1836 the territorial legislature meeting at Belmont voted to put the capital there, largely because it sat between Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien. Doty named it for James Madison, who had died that June, and named the downtown streets after the other signers of the Constitution. The Ho-Chunk call the region Teejop, land of the four lakes, and downtown still sits on the neck between Mendota and Monona. The first capitol cornerstone was laid in 1837, and Governor Nelson Dewey's act created the University of Wisconsin on July 26, 1848.
