The name may come from the Ojibwe emikwaan, a ladle, or from the Menominee mekon, a feather. In October 1839 twenty German families from Pomerania settled Freistadt in the western part of what is now the city, and these Old Lutherans built Trinity Lutheran Church in 1840, the first Lutheran church in Wisconsin. Mequon incorporated as a city in 1957, at a population of roughly 7,500, specifically to keep from being annexed by Milwaukee. Concordia University Wisconsin moved its campus here from Milwaukee in 1983.
