The place was Boston Ravine, then Centerville, and took its present name around 1852 for reasons nobody recorded. What it had was hard rock gold: from 1900 to 1925 the Empire and the North Star produced more gold than any other mines in the county, and William Bowers Bourn II, who owned the Empire, bought and revived the North Star in 1884. Between 1860 and 1895 Cornish tin miners arrived in such numbers that they made up three quarters of the town, and the pasty is still local food because of it. Lola Montez lived here, and her house is a California historical landmark.
