The Morikami gardens west of town remember the Yamato Colony, a Japanese farming settlement started here in 1905 that mostly did not last. Its gardens are laid out to be walked one section at a time. William S. Linton, a Republican congressman from Michigan, bought a tract here in 1894 and sold plots for a farming settlement under his own name. After the farming went badly the town changed its name in 1901 to Delray, after a neighborhood in Detroit, to mark a fresh start. It incorporated three times as it grew: the Town of Delray on October 9, 1911, the Town of Delray Beach on October 9, 1923, and the City of Delray Beach on May 11, 1927. Japanese settlers from the nearby Yamato farming colony took part in town life from 1905, and the Morikami museum and gardens carry the name of one of them.
