Naples was founded in 1886 by John Stuart Williams, a former Confederate general and Kentucky senator, and Walter N. Haldeman, a Louisville businessman, who promoted the place by claiming the bay here surpassed the bay at Naples in Italy. The pier opened in 1888, when about eighty people lived here, and a hotel followed the next year. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad extension reached town in 1927, though serious development waited until after the Second World War. It did not officially become a city until 1949, sixty-three years after it was named.
