Sarasota incorporated as a town on October 14, 1902 and as a city on May 13, 1913. In 1927 John Ringling moved the winter quarters of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey here, and the circus became part of what the city is. He left it the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, which holds the Circus Museum, and Ca' d'Zan, the Venetian-styled house he built on the bay. After the war a group of local architects developed what is now called the Sarasota School, a mid-century modernism worked out specifically for subtropical heat and light rather than imported from a colder place.
