Athens sits on the North Oconee River in Clarke County, in the rolling Piedmont of northeast Georgia, and city and county merged into a single government in 1990. It was chosen in 1801 as the site of the first chartered state university in the nation, which is why the University of Georgia and the town have never really been separable. On the city hall lawn stands the double-barreled cannon, cast at a local foundry in 1863 by a community expecting invasion, designed to fire two balls joined by a chain; nobody could synchronise the barrels and it was never used in battle. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia covers three hundred and thirteen acres with trails, a conservatory and a chapel, and the North Oconee River Greenway is building out a thirteen-mile trail.
