Just east of Atlanta in DeKalb County, Decatur centers on a walkable downtown square near Agnes Scott College and Emory, and its independent, arts-and-food-loving community keeps a lively appetite for yoga studios, meditation circles, and energy-healing practitioners.
A MARTA train stops steps from the square, and the porches over in Oakhurst stay busy on warm evenings. Flower essences leave Michigan already blended for you, so gentle support turns up at the door instead of adding one more errand to a full and very walkable week.
Decatur was named in 1823 for Commodore Stephen Decatur, the naval hero of the War of 1812, when the legislature picked a land lot for the seat of DeKalb County, itself created in 1822 from parts of Henry, Gwinnett and Fayette. It began as a trading centre for small farmers with stone quarrying in the country around it. Its most consequential decision was a refusal: in the 1830s Decatur did not want to become the railroad terminus, so the line went a few miles west instead and grew into Atlanta. In 1853 Fulton County was cut from the western half of DeKalb along a straight north-south line. Much of the Battle of Atlanta was fought in DeKalb, with troops entrenched around Decatur's square and supply wagons parked in its cemetery.
