Louis Jolliet came up the Des Plaines with Father Jacques Marquette in 1673 and the city carries his name. It grew on stone and water: local limestone built the town, and it was one of the principal ports on the Illinois and Michigan Canal. The old Joliet prison was completed in 1858 entirely out of limestone quarried here and at Romeoville, was the largest state prison in Illinois when it opened, closed in 2002 and reopened for tours in 2018. The Rialto Square Theatre downtown was a haunt of Al Capone's and is one of the more extravagant surviving movie palaces in the state.
